SUMMARY:
The District Manager directs the overall management of assigned stores including the achievement of operating goals and targeted sales and profit figures. The District Manager ensures store management adheres to company operating standards and reflects the desired image in the various communities in which the company operates. Proactively the District Manager takes steps to ensure all staff focuses on delivering a safe and superior shopping experience for the customer.

Regular Travel and Overnight Travel is required within the district of Metro Stores this position oversees. This district covers stores in the following areas: Peel Region, Halton Region, Sault Ste Marie & Timmins.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop the operating plan and goals for each store within the district for customer focus, sales, profits, controllable expenses, labor and shrink
  • Define the tactics necessary to meet the operating plan and goals and maximize sales and profit by store
  • Support Organizational priorities and minimize risk to the company by ensuring adherence to Health & Safety regulations, compliance with Loss Prevention, Quality Assurance, Risk Management requirements, Company Policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining agreements
  • Hire, train, manage and develop a staff of store management who are competent in technical proficiency capable of attaining or exceeding sales and profit goals set for the stores within the district
  • Ensure optimum customer satisfaction levels and standards, and ensure effective resolutions to customer inquiries or complaints
  • Conduct reviews with the Store Manager on controls over inventory and controllable expenses to assure desired profit levels. Conduct reviews of all financial reporting and P&L information. Monitor and evaluate actual operating results versus the budget for each store and the departments within each store. Work with the Store Manager to correct significant variances from the budget.
  • Visit each store and meet with store management on a regular basis to review operations, productivity, labour, inventory and other operational items. Ensure each store portrays a customer focused environment.
  • Ensure the Store Manager executes merchandising and marketing plans at the store level that are consistent with district, banner and department goals and objectives. Work directly with Store Managers and Department Managers, Field Specialists and Distribution Centre staff to ensure adequate on-hand inventory levels, especially of advertised items.
  • Responsible for the formal performance management process for store management including: compensation, performance feedback, coaching and mentoring
  • Oversee the Labour Relations function which includes coaching and advising Store Managers in their dealings with various Union Representatives and employees during the grievance resolution process

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree or College diploma
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience including 3 to 5 years in Store Management
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Strong knowledge of collective agreements and Labour Relations, Company policies and procedures, and relevant legislation
  • Regular travel is required, including frequent overnight travel. Must have a valid G Ontario driver's license.
  • Ability to be away from home occasionally overnight and for longer than normal workday.
  • Flexibility in hours of work is required
  • Intermediate computer skills - working knowledge of Microsoft office

RELATIONSHIPS:
Internally has regular contact with Store Managers, Assistant Managers, Department Heads, Field Merchandising and various Head Office Departments. Externally has contact with Union Representatives, Suppliers or outside service providers, and customers.
