Position Summary...

This role is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing the execution of compliance standards and controls related to supplier food safety and compliance initiatives from sourcing suppliers through to product lifecycle. This position is required to work closely with cross-functional teams, including Private Brands, Sourcing and Merchandising, to develop and implement food safety standards and procedures related to sourcing, development, marketing and merchandising. This position develops and delivers of training and communication to key stakeholders, monitors execution of the supplier food safety program, inlcuding monitoring external testing and inspection labs and labelling providers, and monitors the regulatory landscape and ensures the food safety programs are compliant.

What you'll do...

1. Leads the Supplier Food Safety team responsible for supplier food safety programs including Private Brand supplier approvals, product launches, recalls, customer complaints, investigations, regulatory inquiries, food labelling, etc. Oversees the development of training, communications, policies and guidelines applicable to supplier food safety programs for domestic and imported products and ensures they are consistent with Walmart global and market requirements and local regulation. Facilitates food safety training for stakeholders, as needed.

2. Provides technical assistance and advisory services pertaining to the launch of programs involving internal and external business partners (i.e. Private Brands, marketing campaigns, imports, fresh program). Completes formal Food Safety Program reassessment on an annual basis or upon any food safety system change and/or regulation that would mandate reassessment. Communicates changes to internal and external stakeholders.

3. Communicates Walmart food safety standards to business partners and suppliers and monitors compliance with such standards. For example, food safety expectations for products and specific reports designed to reduce risk of foodborne illness (e.g. E. coli testing and specific reporting for beef products).

4. Collaborates with suppliers and cross-functional partners to address challenges associated with processes, suppliers and products and develops appropriate food safety and compliance testing program. This will include testing for microbiological specifications (bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria) as well as verification of compliance with packaging and labeling requirements (nutritional content, product claims such as "organic", "low fat", or "peanut free", disclosure of allergens, etc). This position will maintain relationship with third party test labs, ensure labs are accredited, and audit lab facilities.

5. Tracks changes in federal and provincial laws relevant to food safety and regulatory compliance regarding new regulations, Health Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency initiatives and communicate findings and options to address the impact, to the business and suppliers as appropriate. Deals directly with regulators, federally and provincially, on product concerns.

6. Provides oversight and direction to the food recall manager, who is responsible to advise on whether recalls are required for specific products and coordinate execution of recall. Develops program designed to ensure traceability of food items from factory through to store shelves.

7. Tracks all product complaints and supplier issues and communicates to merchants. Responds to safety and regulatory compliance related complaints, both to government and to suppliers, and ensures that quality related concerns are forwarded to merchants. Review of reports from third party laboratory testing to ensure all private label food items are compliant to specifications agreed to between Wal-Mart and the vendor.

8. Creates, maintains, and executes training content relevant to Supplier food safety & Compliance portfolio to business stakeholders. Provides ongoing coaching & support to direct reports with a focus on building competencies and ensuring consistency of execution. Plans resources to support business initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in food science, microbiology, or related field
  • 8 to 10 years' experience in food manufacturing
  • Advanced food safety certifications
  • HACCP certified auditor or equivalent
  • Lead a team
