Assistant Category Manager

Summary:

The Assistant Category Manager is responsible for supporting the assigned category by utilizing both internal data tools and external data modeling. This role assists the Category Manager in achieving performance targets and strategy-related activities, including product assortment, promotion, pricing, and planograms.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Category Manager in developing overall category objectives, financial goals, market penetration strategies, and leadership positioning for assigned categories.
  • Assist in the development of sales and promotional plans, including product distribution, advertising layouts, theme events, seasonal opportunities, and in-store activities to achieve category targets.
  • Assist in maintaining the promotional calendar to maximize sales and profits within the assigned categories.
  • Collaborate with the Category Manager to recommend new items and identify items to be discontinued, using existing analytical tools to optimize SKU and assortment mix, space allocation, sales, profits, and advertising effectiveness.
  • Complete scheduled category reviews for the assigned categories as required.
  • Modify category plans and objectives to meet overall sales and profit targets.
  • Support the implementation of pricing strategies for categories and make recommendations for setting retail prices for individual items in accordance with corporate pricing guidelines (Produce area experience is helpful).
  • Support the Category Manager in the development of category planograms (POGs) and merchandising strategies based on long-term strategic profitability.
  • Define space allocation based on targeted revenue and profit contributions (Produce and Fresh experience required).
  • Potentially work with the Category Administrator to ensure that all POGs are current and that the correct data for size, shape, and shelf space considerations are used.
  • Conduct analysis of retail history, advertising success, product movement, and overall category management.
  • Monitor competitive and industry activities related to merchandising, marketing, assortment, pricing, and promotions.
  • Conduct bi-monthly competitive store visits to gain firsthand insights in all regions for which they have responsibility.

Role Requirements:

While formal qualifications are valuable, we will also consider candidates with relevant hands-on experience and a passion for food in all related areas, as well as some of the following qualifications:

  • College diploma or university studies in business or a related field required.
  • 3-5 years of retail food store experience, with knowledge across all areas of the store, specially Produce, Fresh, Frozen, and Center Store.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a Category Management or Merchandising role, demonstrating an understanding of the promotional planning and execution process.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel is required to produce effective spreadsheets, reports, documents, and presentations, or a willingness to train.
  • Proficiency in Category Management Tools, MS Office, and NAV BI Reports.
  • Travel required (30%). A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Attention to detail, creative thinking, ability to manage change, analytical thinking, strong communication skills, and customer-focused approach.
