Description

The Community and Family Services worker is responsible for performing both Food Bank and Thrift Store duties which ensure The Salvation Army Tweed Ministries are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

ACCOUNTABILITIES: THRIFT STORE CLERK (50%)

Operations

  • Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
  • Be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
  • Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
  • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing, and storing donations.
  • Possess knowledge of stock to respond to customer enquiries by phone/in person.
  • Pay attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store.
  • Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, which include window displays and merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through "Tidy Maintenance".
  • Contribute to the control of inventory by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing as directed.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory levels on the sales floor and remove inventory from sales floor as directed.
  • Handle the merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assist in stock rotation - "bailing" items in the store.
  • Assist donors with their contributions, unload donations and place stock in appropriate warehouse location.
  • Maintain the proper sorting and processing of all donated goods, ensure compliance with quality standards; that all products are priced correctly as per store policy.
  • Work with volunteers as assigned.

Communications

  • Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.

ACCOUNTABILITIES: FOOD BANK (50%)

Service Responsibilities - Community & Family Services

  • Maintain cleanliness of food bank, and organization of stock, by date and in appropriate locations; utilize FIFO food management.
  • Assist with food drives if needed.
  • Ensure that all clients are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Ensure the safe and careful handling of all deliveries, donations etc. while protecting the property and donations.
  • Assist with pick-up and delivery of food and donations from/to donors and clients using program vehicle.
  • Record statistical data in a clear, organized, and accurate manner.
  • Assist with Community Lunch Program.

Health and Safety

  • Keep food bank area clean and safe by adhering to all health and safety standards recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Contribute to the overall safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and guests (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the buildings).
  • Use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer.
  • Report any workplace hazards, dangers, safety issues, injuries, or illness' immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other position related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent part-time position based on 15 hours per week at Tweed Thrift Store and 5 hours per week at the Tweed food bank.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, lifting, bending, crouching, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and kneeling.
  • Work environment is typically at the Thrift Store and Food bank in generally agreeable conditions.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of Secondary School
  • Safe Food Handlers Certification is an asset.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience
  • Experience working in a food bank would be an asset.
  • Brand awareness would be a definite asset.
  • Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.
  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience working in community-based programs, including experience working with multi-barriered persons.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Willingness to Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
